The calculation is based on: Wall Area = 2 × (length + width) × height - door area - window area. Wallpaper rolls needed = Net Area ÷ Coverage per roll. We add 10% for waste and pattern matching.
How Does a Wallpaper Calculator Work?
Wall Area Calculation
A wallpaper calculator first calculates the total surface area of your walls. This is done by measuring the perimeter of the room (2 × length + 2 × width) and multiplying by the wall height. This gives you the total area that needs to be covered.
Door and Window Deduction
Most rooms have doors and windows that don't need wallpaper. Our calculator automatically deducts these areas from the total wall area, giving you a more accurate estimate of the actual area to be covered.
Wallpaper Rolls Calculation
Once we have the net wall area, we divide by the wallpaper coverage per roll. Standard wallpaper rolls typically cover about 5.3 square meters. We also add a 10% waste allowance for pattern matching and trimming.

Wall Area = 2 × (length + width) × height

Net Area = Wall Area - Door Area - Window Area

Rolls = Net Area ÷ Coverage per Roll

Example Calculation
Sample Room

Calculate Wall Area
2 × (5 + 4) × 2.4 = 2 × 9 × 2.4 = 43.2 sqm
Deduct Doors and Windows
43.2 - 2.0 - 3.0 = 38.2 sqm
Calculate Rolls Needed
38.2 ÷ 5.3 = 7.21 rolls
Add 10% Waste Allowance
7.21 × 1.10 = 7.93 rolls → Round up to 8 rolls

Measure Carefully
Always measure your walls carefully. Wallpaper patterns require precise measurements for proper alignment.
Account for Pattern Repeat
Larger pattern repeats require more wallpaper. Add extra rolls if your wallpaper has a pattern repeat over 50cm.
Buy Extra Rolls
Purchase at least 10% extra for waste, pattern matching, and future repairs.
Check Batch Numbers
