What is this calculator?

A paint coverage calculator answers the reverse question from a paint quantity calculator: how much wall area can a known amount of paint cover? Homeowners use it when they already have leftover paint, a partial can, or a fixed number of gallons and want to know whether it can cover a closet, accent wall, bedroom, or touch-up project.

How does this calculator work?

Step 1: enter the amount of paint available. Step 2: choose or enter the coverage rate per gallon or per liter. Step 3: the calculator multiplies paint quantity by coverage and shows the approximate surface area for one coat.

Formula

Coverage Area = Paint Quantity x Coverage per Gallon Default Coverage: 350 sq ft per gallon, or about 10 sqm per liter Paint quantity is the amount available. Coverage rate is the label value for one coat on a suitable surface.

Example Calculation

Example: A homeowner has 1.5 gallons left from a living room project. If the paint covers 350 sq ft per gallon, coverage area = 1.5 x 350 = 525 sq ft for one coat. For two coats, plan around 262 sq ft of finished wall coverage before texture or touch-up loss.

Common Mistakes

  • Using one-coat coverage for a two-coat repaint.
  • Assuming old paint will cover patched or porous surfaces evenly.
  • Ignoring how much paint has dried on the rim, tray, or roller.
  • Using exterior paint coverage for an interior wall or the reverse.
  • Forgetting that dark-to-light color changes may need primer or another coat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is paint coverage?
Paint coverage is the surface area a paint can cover for one coat under normal conditions. It is usually listed on the label.
Can leftover paint cover a full room?
It depends on wall area and number of coats. Use the coverage result as one-coat area, then compare it with paintable wall area.
Does coverage change by surface?
Yes. Rough, patched, bare, or porous surfaces can use more paint than a smooth primed wall.
Should I use 350 or 400 sq ft per gallon?
Use the number on your paint label. If you are unsure, 350 sq ft per gallon is a more cautious planning number.
Is this the same as the Paint Calculator?
No. This tool starts with paint quantity and estimates coverage area. The Paint Calculator starts with room measurements and estimates paint needed.

Tips

Check Paint Label

Always check the manufacturer's stated coverage rate on the paint can.

Prepare Surface

Proper surface preparation improves paint coverage and adhesion.

Two Coats Minimum

Most projects require at least two coats for full coverage.
