How does this calculator work?
Step 1: enter deck length and width to calculate surface area. Step 2: calculate the coverage of one board from board width and length. Step 3: divide deck area by board coverage, add waste for cuts and layout, and round up to whole boards.
Formula
Deck Area = Length x Width
Board Coverage = Board Width x Board Length
Boards Required = Ceiling(Deck Area / Board Coverage x 1.15)
Board width should reflect actual installed width and planned spacing, not just the nominal lumber label.
Example Calculation
Example: A homeowner is replacing boards on a 12 ft x 16 ft deck. Deck area is 192 sq ft. If each board covers about 5.5 in x 12 ft, convert 5.5 in to 0.458 ft, so one board covers about 5.5 sq ft. 192 / 5.5 = 34.9 boards. With 15% waste, the estimate rounds to about 41 boards.
