This calculator provides estimates only. Actual material requirements may vary depending on surface conditions, application methods and project details. Always check product specifications before purchasing materials.
How to use this tile calculator
- 1Enter the length of your room in meters or feet.
- 2Enter the width of your room in meters or feet.
- 3Enter the length and width of your tiles.
- 4Enter the waste percentage (typically 5-10%) for cuts and mistakes.
- 5Click "Calculate" to see the number of tiles needed and extra tiles for waste.
The calculation is based on: Room Area = Length × Width. Tile Area = Tile Length × Tile Width. Tiles Required = Ceiling(Room Area / Tile Area). Extra Tiles = Tiles Required × (Waste Percentage / 100).
Understanding Tile Calculations
Room Area Calculation
First, calculate the total area of your room by multiplying the length by the width. This gives you the total surface area that needs to be covered with tiles.
Tile Area Calculation
Next, determine the area of a single tile by multiplying its length by its width. This could be in square meters or square feet depending on your unit system.
Waste Allowance
Always add a waste allowance when purchasing tiles. This accounts for: tiles that break during installation, cuts needed for edges and corners, and future repairs. The recommended waste percentage depends on the layout complexity and tile size.
Calculation Formula
Room Area
Room Area = Length × Width
Tile Area
Tile Area = Tile Length × Tile Width
Tiles Required
Tiles = Ceiling(Room Area ÷ Tile Area)
Extra Tiles for Waste
Extra = Tiles × (Waste % ÷ 100)
Example Calculation
Sample Project
- • Room Length: 5 meters
- • Room Width: 4 meters
- • Tile Length: 0.6 meters (60cm)
- • Tile Width: 0.3 meters (30cm)
- • Waste Percentage: 5%
Calculate Room Area
5 × 4 = 20.00 sqm
Calculate Tile Area
0.6 × 0.3 = 0.18 sqm
Calculate Tiles Required
20 ÷ 0.18 = 111.11 → 112 tiles (rounded up)
Calculate Extra Tiles
112 × 5% = 6 extra tiles
Total: 112 + 6 = 118 tiles
Tile Installation Tips
Plan Your Layout
Dry-lay tiles before applying adhesive to visualize the pattern and ensure proper alignment. This helps avoid costly mistakes.
Start from the Center
Begin tiling from the center of the room and work outward. This ensures that any cut tiles are placed against the walls where they're less visible.
Use Tile Spacers
Use tile spacers to maintain consistent grout lines. This creates a professional look and makes grouting easier.
Cut Tiles Carefully
Use a wet saw for clean, precise cuts. Measure twice and cut once to minimize waste and ensure a perfect fit.
